What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring trance state it is very easy for anyone to achieve. If you have ever driven from one point to another with no memory of how you got there, got up in the morning & found yourself washed, dressed & ready for work without remembering doing any of those things, then you have been in trance.

What is cognitive hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy believes that trance is an everyday phenomenon, and that the unconscious part of our mind (the part responsible for keeping us safe and for controlling all our automatic responses) has a great deal of influence on our day to day life. As human beings, we tend to create our own model of the world, which we often mistake for reality. Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses the client’s natural trance states to uncover the unconscious thoughts and memory patterns generating and sustaining a particular problem. With guidance from a qualified hypnotherapist clients can find ways to modify these problem state patterns and take full conscious control of their behaviour, as they find their solution state.

Why should I see a hypnotherapist instead of another type of therapist?

Hypnotherapy is a very effective way of helping people remove 'blocks' which have been holding them back from achieving their goals. Please click here to read 10 Good Reasons to See a Hypnotherapist.

Is hypnosis dangerous?

No. It is an entirely voluntary state that you can choose to come out of at any time.

Will I remain in control?

Yes, you remain in control at all times. A hypnotherapist does not have any control over you. In fact, the state of hypnosis is in fact one of heightened awareness where it is possible for your mind to be aware of many more things than is possible in the conscious state.

What is different about our approach to hypnotherapy?

Thought Potential’s work is underpinned by the Word Weaving approach, developed by Trevor Silvester of the Quest Institute. Unlike many traditional Hypnotherapists who have a script for every client issue, we believe in tailoring each intervention to the specific client. As Word Weaving suggests, the problem is not the problem; it is the client’s unique relationship to the problem that's the problem. A “stop-smoking” script may stop one person from ever lighting another cigarette, but have absolutely no effect on another.

What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?

Emotional Freedom Technique is a technique derived from Thought Field Therapy™ work by Dr. Roger Callahan. It is an advanced therapy which acts to eliminate negative emotions by balancing the body’s energy system. In essence, EFT is an emotional form of acupuncture - without the needles!  Instead, certain meridian energy points are stimulated by tapping with the fingertips while the client is "tuned in" to the problem. It is excellent at sorting out phobias and gets brilliant results with all sorts of problems including emotional overeating. When you finally resolve your issue, you will be left with the memory without the associated feelings. EFT is quick to learn and the client can use it themselves any time they feel the need.

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) explores the relationship between how we think (neurology), how we communicate through words and body language (linguistics), and our patterns of behaviour and emotions (programming). Over time, each person's memories, beliefs, values, decisions and interpretations of events that occur, develop into their own unique 'model of the world'. Each of us uses this internal model to make sense of the world around us. This has a profound effect on our thoughts, behaviour, and relationships with others, because we tend to think that everyone else’s model is the same as ours.

NLP provides tools and techniques to understand our model of the world and the structure of our behaviour. With it, you can identify negative thought patterns, limiting beliefs and processes that might be holding you back, and change them. It can be used in everything from personal relationships to the business world – anywhere where communication is a factor.
